My favourite Halloween was 22 years ago when I walked through a mall in Seattle full of children and grownups in horror regalia. ‘Twas the night before I left my ex-husband and the city we lived in together.

Halloween has never been my thing. I don’t do the costumes. I don’t go to the parties. I don’t even watch the parade here in NYC.

But that Halloween in Seattle, I realised that I’d been wearing my own full horror regalia for the past two years–the duration of my marriage.

I’d been wearing the costume of Wife.
